Five acclaimed contemporary directors tell the story of five legendary Hollywood filmmakers who enlisted in the armed forces to document World War II.

Five Came Back is an American documentary based on the 2014 book Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War by journalist Mark Harris. It was released as a stand-alone documentary in New York and Los Angeles, and as a three-part series on Netflix, on March 31, 2017. The documentary focuses on five directors – John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens whose war-related works are analyzed by modern filmmakers, respectively Paul Greengrass, Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Guillermo del Toro, and Lawrence Kasdan. Meryl Streep, who serves as narrator, won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Narrator for her performance.

As most of you know I am an avid movie goer, its a hobby of mine that started in my early teens. I like a variety of genres and gravitate to war movies/documentaries whenever possible. So when I saw this and read about this particular one, I had to watch it. Little did I know that this series brought to life the history behind the WWII films as a result of these 5 directors.

I've watched countless documentaries on this subject over the years, but this one without a doubt is truly breathtaking. It’s told from such a different perspective than I've ever seen before. What starts out at first glance as a film about filmmaking, it rapidly becomes way more that one could imagine.

As a result of them enlisting and going to war had a deep profound effects on these 5 directors. Absolutely riveting, heartfelt, heart-wrenching and utterly breathtaking. Loved it.
