Hustlers is a 2019 American crime drama film written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, based on New York magazine's 2015 article "The Hustlers at Scores" by Jessica Pressler. Lopez is also a producer on the film through Nuyorican Productions, alongside Jessica Elbaum, Will Ferrell, and Adam McKay through their Gloria Sanchez banner.
First announced in February 2016, the film was originally supposed to be financed and distributed by Annapurna Pictures. However following the company's financial issues, they dropped the rights in October 2018 and STX Entertainment picked them up. Much of the cast joined that fall through the following spring, and filming took place in New York City from March to May 2019.
Hustlers had its world premiere on September 7, 2019, at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was theatrically released in the United States on September 13, 2019, by STXfilms. The film received positive reviews from critics, with considerable praise for Lopez's performance.
I’m going to shoot straight with you………If you are a big Jennifer Lopez fan who sees every movie she's in, this is a movie that you'll want to see. If you like movies in which the majority of the scenes are set in strip clubs, this is your kind of movie. If you like movies about shallow, unlikable characters who spend most of their time at work suggestively posing and dancing for customers and most of their time away from work drinking, partying, and laughing about the money they've stolen, by all means go see this movie. If’ not you may want to think twice about this one. I was intrigued and let down throughout the film.
J-Lo was amazing in this role, as was Constance Wu and novice writer and director Lorene Scafaria did an ok job directing. Screenplay was not the best. Pacing was too slow (good at the beginning of the film, to some what of a let down toward the end - actually the opposite of 99% of movies). Aside from this being based on real events, it’s a lot of "girl power" showing them as the victims with none of the men they were robbed……. clearly a one sided view
This film received may 1/10 ratings however for me it was an honest 5/10 with the majority of the points for the leads performances.
My opinion - wait till it comes out On-Demand, Prime, Netflix or Red Box.
