Let Him Go is a 2020 American Neo-Western drama film produced, written and directed by Thomas Bezucha, based on the 2013 novel of the same name by Larry Watson. The film was theatrically released in the United States on November 6, 2020, by Focus Features, and received generally positive reviews from critics.
Being a Costner (Yellowstone) and Diane Lane fan I tried to see this film at the theater several times to no avail due to the roller coaster COVID opening and closing of theaters in town. So as I was perusing movies on Amazon Prime I came across this in the streaming section. Heads up its a $19.99 rental, however I’ve never gone to the theater for two without spending $30+. So for us it was an easy decision to rent.
This is one of those films that as your watching you find yourself revising your own personal thoughts and feelings about what the characters are portraying in the film. I think for most mature audiences, it will affect them in this way for the most part.
Pace is a little slow in the first part of the film with minimal dialog, but quickly begins to unravel that will causes you to want to see what happens next. It’s an authentic feeling enough to really drag you into it, whether you like where it's going or not. It’s not your predictable Hollywood film and certainly isn't unfamiliar territory, however the characters are more realistic than most modern Hollywood films.
Diane Lane nailed this role at this stage in her career/life with great potential for an Oscar. Costner was definitely very understated and subtle himself in another very strong performance. My advice to those with mature viewing eyes, don't miss this film! One of the better films I've seen this year - giving the fact the movie industry is COVID Quarantined to no end!
