Biographical musical film based on the life of musician Elton John. The film follows John's early days as a prodigy at the Royal Academy of Music to his musical partnership with Bernie Taupin. The film is titled after John's 1972 song "Rocket Man".
An Elton John biopic had been in development for almost two decades, with the project going through studios including Walt Disney Studios and Focus Features, directors including Michael Gracey, and actors including Tom Hardy and Justin Timberlake. After creative differences with Focus halted an initial production start in 2014, John took the project to Paramount Pictures, with Egerton and Fletcher signing on in April 2018. Principal photography began in August 2018 and was completed later that year. Rocketman premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on 16 May 2019, and was released in the United Kingdom on 22 May 2019 and in the United States on 31 May 2019. The film received positive reviews from critics, with Egerton's performance and the musical numbers receiving general praise.
I went in thinking that this movie was going to be a typical musical and I wasn’t quite excited about it. I couldn’t have been MORE WRONG. This moving, heartfelt film documenting the life of Elton John is magnificent. It spans the years from his boyhood growing up in England yearning for love from his cold father, his partnership with lyricist Bernie Taupin and his rise to super stardom.
This is an all inclusive tale featuring both the success and drug-fueled sadness of a man searching for love in his Circle of Life story. If you are a fan of Elton John, this film captures all of the notes and the tales you've read about. Director Fletcher has created a spectacle perfectly suited for an entertainer who has thrived on lavish lifestyle, costumes and crowd-pleasing performances.
The songs chosen from the Elton/Taupin songbook perfectly mirror the particular scenes portrayed in the film, even if they don't match the specific era they were created in. This film is magical. This film was masterfully done in a perfect fashion to present Elton John's life story, comprised of soulful solos to high-octane choreographed production numbers.
Although different music from Queen, it was every bit a good as the movie Bohemian Rhapsody and Egerton doing an amazing job as Elton as Remi Malik did as Freddie Mercury.
Don’t miss this one!!
