In the early 18th century, England is at war with the French. Nevertheless, duck racing and pineapple eating are thriving. A frail Queen Anne occupies the throne, and her close friend, Lady Sarah, governs the country in her stead, while tending to Anne's ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant, Abigail, arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing, and Abigail sees a chance to return to her aristocratic roots.

The Favourite had its world premiere at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on 30 August 2018, where it won two awards: the Grand Jury Prize and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress (for Colman). It was released in the United States on 23 November 2018, by Fox Searchlight Pictures. The film received critical acclaim, with praise for its screenplay, direction, cinematography, music, costume design, production values, and the performances of the three leading women.

The American Film Institute selected it as one of the top 10 films of 2018, and among other accolades, it received five Golden Globe Award nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, winning Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical for Colman. Furthermore, the film received 12 nominations at the 72nd British Academy Film Awards including Best Film, Best Actress (Colman), two nominations for Best Supporting Actress (both Stone and Weisz respectively) and Best Director (Lanthimos).

This is not my usual type of film but the trailer intrigued me so I thought I'd give it a whirl and I am glad that I did. Good direction with a great script. The actors clearly had fun with the witty dialogue they were given in this dark period drama about one-up-man-ship.

The chemistry between the actors and also the visual story is absolutely stunning and I'm just wowed by how well done everything is in this film. I can't say I have anything bad to say about this film. And please go into this movie without spoilers, I find that it is way more enjoyable to be surprised by the actual story and leaves more excitement for the viewer……..trust me!
