Vikings is inspired by the sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, one of the best-known legendary Norse heroes and notorious as the scourge of England and France. The show portrays Ragnar as a farmer who rises to fame by raiding England and eventually becomes a Scandinavian king, with the support of his family and fellow warriors. In the later seasons, the series follows the fortunes of his sons and their adventures in England, Scandinavia, Kievan Rus', the Mediterranean and North America.
Vikings is a historical drama television series created and written by Michael Hirst for the History channel. Filmed in Ireland, it premiered on March 3, 2013, in Canada. The series concluded on December 30, 2020, when the second half of the sixth season was released in its entirety on Prime Video in Ireland, ahead of its broadcast on History in Canada from January 1 to March 3, 2021. A sequel series, titled Vikings: Valhalla, is in development for Netflix.
If you were a GoT’s devoted fan as I am, this will be the closest series you’ll find to watch. Keep in mind this series is 79 episodes long. Taking you from the very beginning of Ragnar Lothbrok’s escapades many years in the future. For me I was hooked after the first season and binged all episodes in just over a weeks time. It kept my interest throughout all season despite some of the critics comments about it dying out toward the end of the season.
The first few episodes don't really convey the scale of the ones that would eventually follow. The amount of characters involved in this series is unbelievable. Ragnar’s character basically caries the beginning seasons, however that quickly changes and unfolds into the massive cast that will cary you through to the end of the series. This is one of those shows where you find yourself trying to remember everyones unconventional names. Not to worry, as time goes on your will become very familiar with each character. The shows does a good job of that!
As with GoT’s the scale of the show gets bigger and bigger and the battle scenes more and more expansive as the seasons progresses. As I mentioned above for me it’s right up there with GoT’s, The Last kingdom and others of this genre.
If you are one who loves endless episodes of a major series, this show is for you…..enjoy!
