Based on a true story A headstrong portrait painter travels from New York to Dakota to paint a portrait of Sitting Bull in 1890 embarks on a dangerous journey and must face off with an Army officer intent on war with the Native Americans.
Despite mixed reviews, Michael Greyeyes received critical acclaim for his portrayal of Sitting Bull. The New York Times critic Jeannette Catsoulis called his performance "a miracle of intelligence and dignity". RogerEbert.com contributor Susan Wloszczyna raved about his performance, calling it "the most subtle, soulful, and believable". Los Angeles Times and Village Voice described his presence as captivating as “wry wit and quiet gravity” while the latter described his performance as "stirring".
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee, Dances With Wolves, Hostiles, and this film are all about the same subject…..the removal of Indians from the Western territories/states. Each one of these films tells the story from a different, yet true, perspective.
“Woman Walks Ahead” shows clearly how people can, and do, demonize anybody who doesn't agree with them. Back in NYC of this time period, where the female character played by Jessica Chastain hails from, there were plenty who didn't have a grasp of the situation out West. This movie is so beautiful shot & edited it could be viewed as a silent film loaded with natural physical beauty (New Mexico) that overwhelms the eyes, brain & heart.
The actors, Chastain - Greyeyes - Rockwell, truly live up to the significance of their historic figures. You never really see the roles of the Indian leaders and their people who felt, lived, loved and fought for their ways of life. This movie touches you, affects you deeply in the core of your heart and won't leave any eye dry. A very honest movie that is one of a kind and a history lesson you won't forget.
