Dr Don Shirley is a world-class African-American pianist, who is about to embark on a concert tour in the Deep South in 1962. In need of a driver and protection, Shirley recruits Tony Lip, a tough-talking bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood in the Bronx. Despite their differences, the two men soon develop an unexpected bond while confronting racism and danger in an era of segregation.
Directed by Peter Farrelly, the film was written by Farrelly, Brian Currie and Vallelonga's son, Nick Vallelonga, based on interviews with his father and Shirley, as well as letters his father wrote to his mother. The film is named after The Negro Motorist Green Book, a mid-20th century guidebook for African-American travelers written by Victor Hugo Green, to help them find motels and restaurants that would accept them.
Green Book had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11, 2018, where it won the People's Choice Award. It was then theatrically released in the United States on November 16, 2018, by Universal Pictures.
The film received positive reviews from critics, with Mortensen and Ali's performances. It won the National Board of Review award of best film of 2018, and was also chosen as one of the Top 10 by the American Film Institute, and also received numerous award nominations, including winning the Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture and Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film also received five nominations at the 91st Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Actor (Mortensen), Best Supporting Actor (Ali), Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
For me this was an outstanding true story film showing that color doesn't define us, but how we act ourselves and towards others, does.
Absolute great performances from the entire cast, especially Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali who were perfectly cast and convincing in their roles. It was also great to see comedian Sebastian Maniscalco in this film as well.
Writer, director and producer Peter Farrelly nailed every aspect of this biography. The score, cinematography, sets and visuals were all on point. Excellent drama and comedy perfectly positioned throughout the film.
Given the Oscar nominations its definitely one you don’t want to miss, we were thoroughly entertained.
