The Old Man & the Gun is a 2018 American crime comedy film written and directed by David Lowery, based on the true-life story of Forrest Tucker, a career criminal and prison escape artist. The script is based on David Grann's 2003 article in The New Yorker titled "The Old Man and the Gun", which was later collected in Grann's 2010 book The Devil and Sherlock Holmes. It had its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on August 31, 2018 and was released in the United States on September 28, 2018.
NOTE: This film is Redford's final role, as he announced his intent to retire from acting in August 2018.
If there's a reason to see the movie, it's Redford, whose charismatic, mature presence argues that age has done nothing to diminish his ability to command the screen. The character-driven film shines the most when Redford and Spacek share the screen. It's a fascinating story that would be hard to swallow if it wasn't true.
Not often you get a heart-warming masterpiece about an elderly bank robber, so run, don't walk, to this one. This is the kind of film where you spend 85-90% of the time grinning ear to ear. This is a filmmaker who loves crime cinema, but also loves how Redford as a full star AND as a great actor when given the opportunity appears on camera.
Additionally, this is the kind of cat-and-mouse "thriller" where we genuinely like the cop as much as the robber (Affleck is quite good here).
