It's 1851, and Charlie and Eli Sisters are both brothers and assassins, boys grown to men in a savage and hostile world. The Sisters brothers find themselves on a journey through the Northwest, bringing them to the mountains of Oregon, a dangerous brothel in the small town of Mayfield, and eventually, the gold rush land of California, an adventure that tests the deadly family ties that bind.

The Sisters Brothers is a 2018 western dark comedy directed by Jacques Audiard from a screenplay he co-wrote with Thomas Bidegain, based on the novel of the same name by Patrick deWitt. It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on September 2, 2018, and was released theatrically in the United States on September 21, 2018. Despite receiving positive reviews from critics the film was a box office bomb, grossing just $6 million against its $38 million budget.

The Sisters Brothers takes a little while to get used to, shifting between extreme violence and gentle character comedy. But it makes for a memorable ride. Ultimately its a story about brotherhood, friendship and the insecurity of life in a violent place, the film injects a sweetness and innocence into the genre, mostly through one stellar performance by John C. Reilly.

For me the movie was an “Odd Duck”. At times I wasn’t sure where it was going. It took about half way thru the film until you start to see where its headed.

I was entertained purely due to the cast and their characters. It worked for me and I really liked it, however you might want to give consideration to waiting for this to come out on Red Box, HBO, Prime or NetFlix.
